Okay. Let’s talk about being a bass player for a minute. In my first ebook I describe the role of bass to be something easy, simple and perhaps something that is “minimal”. If this offends you other bass players out there, please hear me out. I didn’t say it wasn’t complicated.
Yup, a good bass player needs to be able to count and play the root notes of the progression. Easy enough. This keeps the groove, helps the voices of the other instruments come out and builds a solid foundation, I mean really, how often to you seek out the foundation of say….your house? Surprisingly, a lot of really good music out there carriers this “sound”, just root. You should try to have some non musician friends listen to a song and focus on the bass and be able to point it out. You’ll be surprised at how many people simply can’t separate it from the rest.
